Hammering out a start-up community

Misc. Web Startup News

by Michelle on March 13, 2008

Some interesting happenings with a couple local web startups. First mytrade has released a new feature using everybody’s favorite (for now) microblogging platform: free instant stock quotes through Twitter.

Now, with a free account at twitter and a cell phone, you can get instant stock quotes anytime, free!

Just join twitter (takes 20 seconds), then ‘follow’ mytrade (by typing in “follow mytrade”). Mytrade will automatically follow you within 1-2 minutes. Once you get that notification that mytrade is following you, you’re ready to get your free quotes

Interactive map service Metro Mapper has announced some ambitious plans for growthand they’re asking for a little help from the community to make that growth possible. Metro Mapper has entered a contest sponsored by Net Squared. The contest’s goal is “remixing the web for social change” and it provides funding and resources for innovative projects that foster social change and empower individuals.

Metro Mapper is a free service currently based in Louisville, KY. We have a set of tools that let us gather public information and put it on interactive maps, which you can see on our site.

But what we are missing is community contributions, data for other United States cities and rural areas, and the ability to show lots more information.

We want to become Your Mapper, a new site that has all of this and an empowered public.

Personnel from top 20 projects in the contest, as determined by online votes, will be invited to a conference in San Jose “to raise interest and get some funding and resources.” So Metro Mapper needs your votes. Register for a Net Squared account, login and vote for Metro Mapper by starring it. While you’re there check out the kind of people Metro Mapper is trying to make business connections with and see if you know any local people who fit the descriptions. It’d be great to mine our community for people who can help this startup grow.

I can count on Forge to help out in times of need. I hope all the members will support Metro Mapper with a registration and a vote today (registration and first round voting ends tomorrow).

Maybe other local startups can submit a project to this contest? Short notice though. I only got my submission in order last week, and it slipped by me that the last day to register to vote is really today (since it can take up to 24 hours for the confirmation email). But you can submit a project through tomorrow.

UPDATE: We just discovered a *bug* in the site. If you are using Internet Explorer 7, and login to try to vote or “star” our project, you can’t!

The [+] voting icon is not visible! So some of you are not crazy…

Until this is resolved with the site owners, see if you can use another alternate browser, like Firefox on a PC or Safari on a Mac, or Opera.

Thanks again and vote today, Friday, by 5pm if you can! It’s the last day of the first round.

3 Vote for Metro Mapper (Again) — Forge Louisville { 03.19.08 | 8:03 am }

[…] Last week I asked you to vote for Metro Mapper in the Net Squared contest and vote you did. Metro Mapper came in at #5 out of 122 projects. That impressive finish in the first round has propelled the Louisville startup into the final round of the competition. Metro Mapper needs to finish in the top 20 during the final round to secure an invitation to a conference in San Jose “to raise interest and get some funding and resources.”So please visit Metro Mapper and get all the details on voting again in the final round of the contest. Good luck Metro Mapper!  […]

Is any one else in Louisville having T1 (Speakeasy) problems? Mine has been down since around midnight last night and I’m still waiting on Bell South to pay me a visit. Hmmm…I’m thinking that last nights storm had something to do with it. But why only my DS1? Grrr….

Has anyone read The New Yorker article by Malcom Gladwell on the frequency of big ideas? If so, what’d you think?
